Raatz Fence/O'Shea's Classic
The Raatz Fence/O'Shea's Classic was held in Louisville, Kentucky this past weekend featuring teams from five different states and some of the top talent in the country. The classic, put on by Keith Baisch and Mercy Academy, was a two day event that did not disappoint. The event saw some competitive match-ups with some impressive games by various players.
Incarnate Word (MO) was involved in two of the more exciting games of the classic. On Friday night, Incarnate Word and Mercer County (KY) had a back-and-forth battle that saw Sonya Morris hit the game-winning shot as time ran out. Incarnate Word also found themselves in another exciting game on Saturday as they nearly completed a 20-point comeback against Louisville Male. Unfortunately for the Red Knights, the comeback could not be completed as they lost the game by three against one of the top teams out of Kentucky.
The "upset" of the tournament came when Butler (KY) defeated nationally ranked Montini Catholic (IL) 43-31 in Saturday's big game. The low-scoring affair was led from start-to-finish by Butler despite a poor shooting game by Montini Catholic. Indiana signee, Jalen Penn, had several clutch buckets throughout the fourth quarter that proved to be too much. Junior post, Molly Lockhart, certainly raised her stock out of this game by handling her own in the paint against Montini's bigs.
The following will be some of stand-out players from each team:
Bullitt East (KY)
Lindsey Duvall (2017, G) - Louisville signee, big time game on both days, unselfish in the flow of the game, capable of taking over
Lexi Taylor (2020, G) - long and lean frame, stood out at times despite youth, scored the ball at multiple levels, a lot of upside to game
Jalen Penn (2017, G) - Indiana signee, big 4th quarter on Saturday to upset Montini Catholic, makes others around her better
Molly Lockhart (2018, C) - played a big game despite foul trouble, used her size on the offensive and defensive end, scored impressively well, stock-riser
Christian Academy (KY)
Shelby Calhoun (2020, G) - jumps very well, impressive athlete in addition to game, double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds on Saturday, high major potential
Sarah McDonald (2019, G) - 28 point game on Saturday, scored in the paint, had multiple and-1 opportunities, looks to score
DuPont Manual (KY)
Nila Blackford (2019, F) - physically strong, used strength to her benefit in scoring opportunities and rebounds, scored out of the trail position, intriguing upside
Tonysha Curry (2017, G) - physical guard, bodied up smaller guards for scoring chances, rebounds, high motor, smart player, high ACT/GPA
Incarnate Word (MO)
Sonya Morris (2018, G) - floor leader, scores in variety, strong frame allows her to play through contact, can play multiple positions
Kiki Britzman (2019, G) - gritty guard, competes, scored mostly around rim, smart player
Rickie Woltman (2019, G) - huge upside, strong hands, kept several plays alive with tips or big rebounds, didn't score much out of post move
Mercer County (KY)
